DARWIN\u2014<\/strong> AirAsia X (D7) <\/a>will suspend its Darwin services to Bali<\/a> and Kuala Lumpur from late April 2026, marking a strategic shift in its Australian network. The decision affects operations at Darwin International Airport (DRW) and reflects the airline\u2019s move to redeploy aircraft to higher-demand markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Darwin\u2013Denpasar route, operated by Indonesia AirAsia (QZ)<\/a> to Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), and the Darwin\u2013Kuala Lumpur service by AirAsia Malaysia (AK) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL)<\/a>, will both end on 28 April 2026. The airline confirmed that bookings on these Northern Territory routes did not reach commercially sustainable levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AirAsia X Darwin Route Suspension<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

AirAsia entered the Darwin market less than a year ago, aiming to strengthen connectivity between Northern Australia and Southeast Asia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the carrier stated that passenger demand remained below expectations, prompting a network adjustment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline is contacting affected passengers directly and processing refunds within 14 days through its MOVE app. It has apologized for the inconvenience and emphasized that the suspension forms part of a broader capacity optimization strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In September 2025, the group also withdrew from the Cairns\u2013Bali market, signaling a measured approach to route performance in secondary Australian cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AirAsia’s Melbourne Bali Launch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While Darwin loses two international links, Melbourne gains a significant boost in Bali connectivity. AirAsia will launch a new Melbourne (Tullamarine Airport \u2013 MEL) to Denpasar service from 21 March 2026, adding approximately 130,000 seats annually for Victorian travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new route underscores Bali\u2019s continued popularity among Australian holidaymakers and supports AirAsia\u2019s growth in primary gateway cities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By concentrating resources in Melbourne, the airline aims to capture stronger outbound leisure demand and improve aircraft utilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adelaide\u2013Bali services will also increase from four to seven weekly flights, rising to 10 during peak seasons. Perth\u2013Bali operations will remain at four daily flights year-round, totaling 28 weekly services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AirAsia’s Australia Network Expansion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beyond Bali, AirAsia is strengthening its Kuala Lumpur network from major Australian hubs. Sydney Airport (SYD) and Melbourne will operate daily flights to Kuala Lumpur, offering premium flatbed seating options on selected services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Karryon<\/a>, Perth\u2013Kuala Lumpur flights will operate twice daily, increasing to three times daily during peak travel periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total, AirAsia plans to raise its Australian frequencies to as many as 100 weekly services during holiday peaks in 2026, compared to 69 weekly services in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline stated that Australia remains a core growth market and that redeploying aircraft to high-demand routes supports sustainable expansion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, AirAsia X also announced a new Kuala Lumpur\u2013London service scheduled to commence on 26 June, further expanding its long-haul footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
