Nearly all priority passengers receive seats near the front of the aircraft.

Those bins fill quickly. Passengers then walk further down the aisle to stow bags in available space. After storing luggage, many attempt to move back toward their assigned seats against the boarding stream. This counterflow creates aisle congestion and slows seating completion.

The issue has been compounded by Southwest’s decision to terminate its iconic two bags fly free policy.

Under that policy, checked baggage demand was high and carry on pressure was limited. With the policy now removed, more passengers bring larger carry on bags into the cabin. The resulting competition for overhead space has intensified boarding friction.

Management has introduced procedural adjustments to reduce jetbridge and aisle congestion.

These changes have delivered limited impact so far. Reducing turn times remains a central objective in Southwest’s cost cutting strategy. Faster aircraft rotation directly supports schedule reliability and operating margins.

Reported by PYOK, union communications indicate that many of these operational problems were foreseeable during planning for the seating transition.

Photo: ur-1988 | Credits to Creator

Union Rebuke Over Early Boarding Proposal

Management recently suggested that flight attendants begin boarding earlier than the scheduled start time to protect on time departures. TWU 556 issued a strong public rebuke.

In a memo to members, the union stated that management “needs to read the room and read and respect our Contract.” It described upper leadership as “out of touch” and argued that decisions were made without considering real world implications for frontline crews.

The union said recent policies have diminished operational flexibility, made jobs harder, and placed flight attendants directly in conflict with frustrated customers. It also warned that poorly structured plans risk pitting workgroups against each other.

Under the current collective bargaining agreement, Southwest flight attendants do not receive boarding pay.

In its most recent negotiations, TWU 556 chose to prioritize higher flying pay rather than compensation for ground duties.

Most domestic flights begin boarding 30 minutes before departure, which was sufficient under the former open seating model.
