BANGKOK <\/strong>\u2013 International passengers departing from Bangkok and other major gateways in Thailand will pay a higher passenger service charge starting June 20. Airports of Thailand (AOT), the state-owned airport operator, confirmed that the revised fee will apply across its six international airports, including Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)<\/a> and Don Mueang International Airport (DMK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new international departure passenger service charge will increase from 730 baht to 1,120 baht per traveler. The adjustment, approved in principle by Thailand\u2019s Civil Aviation Board in December 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thailand Departure Fee Increase<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

AOT stated that the revised international PSC represents an increase of 390 baht per passenger. The domestic departure charge will remain unchanged at 130 baht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision followed a resolution by the Civil Aviation Board, chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport. Authorities reviewed AOT\u2019s proposal before granting approval in principle, ensuring regulatory oversight of the adjustment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AOT emphasized that the passenger service charge is not a tax. Instead, it serves as a dedicated revenue stream to fund airport-related operations, infrastructure upgrades, and passenger service enhancements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The change affects passengers flying with carriers such as Thai Airways (TG) and other international airlines operating from Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), Phuket International Airport (HKT), Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport (CEI), and Hat Yai International Airport (HDY).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Revenue and Infrastructure Plans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to AOT estimates, the higher departure charge could generate approximately 10 billion baht in additional annual revenue. The operator plans to use these funds to modernize facilities and strengthen operational efficiency across its airport network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key projects include continued development of the Satellite Terminal 1 at Suvarnabhumi Airport and terminal upgrades at Don Mueang. These improvements aim to increase passenger handling capacity while enhancing convenience, processing speed, and safety standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AOT also intends to deploy common-use passenger processing systems at all six airports. These systems are designed to streamline check-in procedures, reduce congestion, and improve turnaround efficiency for airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The operator noted that passenger and airline surveys suggest the revised charge is unlikely to influence travel decisions. AOT further stated that Thailand\u2019s updated PSC remains lower than fees imposed at many major international airports worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transit Fee Proposal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the international departure increase, AOT is preparing to propose a new policy to charge passenger service fees for transit and transfer travelers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The operator indicated that more than 90 percent of global airports already impose similar charges on connecting passengers, The Strait Times reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If approved, the measure would align Thailand\u2019s airport revenue model with international practices. AOT believes such a policy would better reflect operational costs associated with handling transfer passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airlines have broadly acknowledged the need for fee adjustments but have encouraged AOT to maintain service quality improvements in parallel. AOT confirmed that it is incorporating airline feedback into ongoing operational planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials maintain that the PSC revision supports long-term investment, safety improvements, and sustainable growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thailand continues to position its airports as competitive regional aviation hubs capable of accommodating future passenger demand while meeting global service benchmarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
