MEMPHIS\u2013<\/strong> A 29-year-old passenger allegedly assaulted a Delta Air Lines (DL)<\/a> flight attendant and later bit a police officer during a confrontation at Memphis International Airport (MEM) on February 17. Authorities confirmed that the incident occurred as Delta flight DL82<\/strong> was preparing to depart for Atlanta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Memphis Police Department, officers responded to Gate 12 around midday after receiving reports of an onboard disturbance. The situation escalated during the detention process, leading to multiple charges against the passenger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta Passenger Arrested at Memphis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Police allege that the woman struck a flight attendant in the face while the aircraft remained at the gate. Crew members immediately reported the incident, prompting law enforcement to board the aircraft before departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When officers attempted to detain the passenger, she allegedly became physically aggressive. During the struggle, she reportedly bit one officer on the arm and kicked another officer in the legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities identified the suspect as Jessica Thomas. She now faces charges of disorderly conduct, two counts of assault on a first responder, and one count of assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas was taken into custody and transported to Shelby County Jail. She is being held on a bond of $2,500 and is scheduled to appear in court later this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta’s Flight Delay Details<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite the disruption, Delta flight DL-82 departed Memphis approximately 37 minutes behind schedule. Public flight tracking data indicates that the delay remained limited and did not result in a cancellation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The quick response by airport staff and law enforcement prevented further escalation inside the cabin. Airport operations continued without significant interruption following the arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to PYOK<\/a>, Delta Air Lines has not publicly disclosed additional details regarding the condition of the affected crew member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, airline policies generally support the immediate removal of passengers who engage in violent or disruptive conduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rising Unruly Cases<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Memphis incident occurred just one day before another reported disturbance involving Delta flight DL-2557 departing from Houston Hobby Airport (HOU). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that case, a male passenger allegedly assaulted both crew members and other travelers shortly after takeoff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft, operated by a Boeing 717 with 85 passengers and five crew members onboard, climbed to approximately 6,050 feet before returning to Houston as a precaution. Air traffic control granted priority landing clearance to ensure a swift and safe return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta later denied initial claims that the passenger attempted to breach the cockpit. The airline clarified that while concerns were raised during early communications, there was no confirmed cockpit intrusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Data from the Federal Aviation Administration shows that 126 unruly passenger incidents were reported in the first month of 2026 alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although this figure reflects ongoing enforcement challenges, it remains significantly lower than 2021 levels, when the FAA recorded nearly 500 incidents per month at its peak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
