FRANKFURT-<\/strong> Frankfurt saw a key expansion of the Lufthansa Group\u2019s short-haul strategy as Lufthansa City Airlines (VL)<\/a> officially opened a new operating base at Frankfurt Airport (FRA)<\/a> on February 9, 2026. The move marks the start of regular flight operations from the Group\u2019s largest hub and strengthens its growing intra-European network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new base follows the airline\u2019s initial launch in Munich in summer 2024 and reflects a wider effort to build scalable short-haul capacity. Lufthansa City Airlines confirmed that Frankfurt will play a central role in its next growth phase, both operationally and strategically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frankfurt Base Launch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lufthansa City Airlines commenced Frankfurt operations with its first flight to Manchester on February 9, operated by an Airbus A320neo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inaugural service underlined the airline\u2019s focus on modern aircraft and high-frequency European routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initial destinations from Frankfurt include Manchester, Berlin, and Valencia, with Berlin and Valencia joining the schedule later in February. D\u00fcsseldorf and M\u00e1laga will follow in March as a second aircraft enters service at the base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline stated that additional destinations will be introduced from summer 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planned routes include London Heathrow, Stockholm, Bilbao, Hamburg, Helsinki, Ibiza, Marseille, and Bucharest, expanding the network across key business and leisure markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Frankfurt base is designed to support steady network growth rather than rapid capacity spikes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lufthansa City Airlines is positioning itself to complement the Group\u2019s wider hub-and-spoke model by feeding long-haul services and serving high-demand European city pairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The use of the Airbus A320neo supports this strategy through improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The aircraft type also provides operational flexibility, allowing the airline to adjust capacity as demand evolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Frankfurt now active, Lufthansa City Airlines operates from two major German hubs. This dual-base model is expected to enhance schedule reliability and improve connectivity across the Group\u2019s European network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fleet And Staffing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

By September 2026, the local fleet in Frankfurt will grow to seven Airbus A320neo aircraft. The airline already operates 13 aircraft from Munich, highlighting a steady but controlled fleet expansion plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, Lufthansa City Airlines operated nearly 16,000 flights and carried around 2 million passengers to 27 destinations. These figures underscore the airline\u2019s rapid integration into the Group\u2019s short-haul operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staffing growth remains a priority at the new base. Around 60 employees have already been hired in Frankfurt, with plans to recruit an additional 80 cockpit crew and 200 cabin crew members in the coming months. The airline\u2019s total workforce currently stands at about 450 employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since September 2025, Lufthansa City Airlines has been a permanent member of the Star Alliance, offering passengers wider network access and loyalty benefits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
