SYDNEY-<\/strong> Qantas Airways (QF)<\/a> is set to take delivery of its fourth Airbus A321XLR next month, marking the first aircraft in the type to feature four onboard toilets. The aircraft is expected to enter service primarily from Sydney (SYD) on long domestic routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delivery comes as Qantas responds to passenger and crew feedback on earlier A321XLRs, which entered service with a lower economy toilet ratio compared with competing domestic fleets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qantas Adds Extra Toilet on A321XLR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The incoming A321XLR, registered VH-OGD and named Bibbulmun Track, is the first in the Qantas order to be fitted with three economy class toilets and one business class toilet. This configuration improves the passenger-to-toilet ratio to approximately one toilet per 59 economy passengers, a notable improvement over the first three aircraft delivered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initial A321XLRs were configured with only two economy toilets, equating to roughly one toilet per 90 passengers. That layout drew criticism from passengers and placed additional pressure on cabin crew, particularly on longer transcontinental services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports from early operations indicated that economy passengers were occasionally directed to use the business class toilet to ease congestion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qantas has confirmed that the first three A321XLRs will receive an additional economy toilet during their first major maintenance cycle in the coming years. Until then, the fourth aircraft is expected to be deployed on routes where the enhanced cabin layout delivers the most operational and customer benefit, The Australian<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A321XLR Role in Replacing Boeing 737<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Airbus A321XLR<\/a> forms a central part of Qantas\u2019 narrowbody fleet renewal strategy, replacing ageing Boeing 737 aircraft across the domestic network. Another three A321XLRs are scheduled for delivery by the end of June, accelerating the transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the airline, customer response to the A321XLR since its entry into service in September last year has been strong, with satisfaction scores ranking among the highest in the fleet. Qantas views the type as a key platform for improving consistency across its domestic product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cabin Refurbishment Plans for 737s and A330s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Alongside new aircraft deliveries, Qantas is moving ahead with a major refurbishment program for existing aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the airline\u2019s 75 Boeing 737s, 42 of the youngest airframes, aged between 10 and 15 years, will receive refreshed interiors aligned with the A321XLR standard. These upgrades are intended to extend service life by up to another decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Refurbishment work will also begin on 10 Airbus A330-200 aircraft at the Brisbane maintenance facility. Economy cabins will be fitted with the same seat design planned for the ultra-long-range Project Sunrise aircraft, while current business class suites will remain unchanged. The first refurbished 737s and A330s are expected to return to service by early next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Refurbishment Improves Experience, Not Reliability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Aviation experts note that while cabin upgrades enhance customer perception, they do not address the underlying reliability challenges of older aircraft. As fleets age, maintenance requirements increase, raising the risk of operational disruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite this, industry analysts see Qantas\u2019 accelerated fleet renewal as a necessary step in a market where airfares remain high, and passenger expectations continue to rise. New aircraft, combined with targeted refurbishments, are viewed as essential to maintaining competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jetstar Widebody Upgrades Underway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Qantas subsidiary Jetstar is following a similar refurbishment path with its Boeing 787-8 fleet. Work is underway on the first of 11 aircraft in Hong Kong, introducing crew rest areas that will enable flights of up to 16 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The refurbishment will expand the business cabin from 21 to 44 seats while reducing economy capacity, lowering total passenger numbers from 335 to 325. The first upgraded 787 is expected to return to service in March, ahead of new Melbourne to Colombo services launching in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
