NAVI MUMBAI-<\/strong> Air India Express (IX)<\/a> has run into delays in its planned network expansion from Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI)<\/a>, as fleet constraints slow the pace of growth initially promised for India\u2019s newest aviation hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Tata Group-owned low-cost carrier had earlier indicated it would rapidly scale operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI)<\/a>, positioning the airport as a key pillar of its domestic and international network. However, revised timelines now suggest that the airline\u2019s connectivity ambitions will take longer to materialize than first announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air India Express Navi Mumbai Plans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Air India Express currently operates flights from Navi Mumbai to Bengaluru and Delhi. Commercial operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport began on December 25, marking a major milestone for the Mumbai metropolitan region\u2019s aviation infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast, IndiGo (6E)<\/a> has already connected the airport to 13 cities, while Akasa Air (QP) serves four destinations. Both carriers have implemented most of the routes they announced during the airport\u2019s launch phase, highlighting a divergence in rollout speed among operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air India Express had stated in September that it aimed to operate 20 daily departures, equivalent to 40 air traffic movements, connecting 15 Indian cities in the initial phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline had also outlined plans to expand to 55 daily departures by mid-2026, including up to five international flights from Navi Mumbai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fleet Constraints Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Senior management has acknowledged that aircraft availability has constrained the airline\u2019s ability to execute these plans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on the sidelines of the Wings India 2026 aviation exhibition in Hyderabad, chief executive officer Aloke Singh described Navi Mumbai as a critical part of the airline\u2019s network but confirmed that expansion would be progressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Singh said Air India Express would take about a year to connect all 15 planned destinations as its fleet grows. He also noted that fleet constraints have forced the airline to rework parts of its overall network strategy, limiting the speed of deployment at new airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The carrier\u2019s fleet currently stands at around 110 aircraft. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Air India Express expects to induct 20 to 24 aircraft during 2026, averaging roughly two aircraft per month, Singh clarified that the total fleet size by the end of the year would remain largely unchanged due to the return of aircraft at the end of lease terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aircraft Transition Plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Air India Express is in the midst of a fleet refresh aimed at increasing the proportion of modern aircraft to deliver a more consistent customer experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As older leased aircraft exit the fleet, newly delivered planes will replace them on a one-to-one basis, maintaining overall capacity levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline received its first line-fit aircraft, customized to its specifications, from Boeing in December 2025. Additional aircraft arriving in 2026 are also expected to be line-fit, marking a shift from earlier inductions that relied heavily on white-tail aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Live Mint<\/a>, the previous induction of 51 aircraft consisted largely of white tails, which are completed aircraft produced without an immediate customer following order cancellations or production overruns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These aircraft allowed for faster expansion but offered less customization compared to line-fit deliveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
