They then requested clearance to divert to San Francisco, citing better runway length, maintenance support, and emergency readiness.

Manual Gear Extension and Approach to SFO

En route to San Francisco, the flight crew successfully extended the landing gear using the alternate manual system.

Cockpit indications confirmed all three landing gear assemblies were down and locked. Despite this, the aircraft was left without nose wheel steering capability, which required a planned runway stop after landing.

Air traffic control coordinated closely with the crew, issuing radar vectors and prioritizing the aircraft for an ILS approach to runway 28R. Emergency services were positioned as a precaution, and the crew provided fuel endurance and souls on board information as part of standard emergency coordination.

Photo: By Nathan Coats from Seattle, WA, United States of America – 02092018_American Airlines_A319_N9006_KMIA_NASEDIT, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=76838600

Safe Landing and Runway Recovery Operations

Flight AA1866 landed safely on runway 28R at San Francisco International Airport.
