NEW DELHI\u2014<\/strong> India is preparing for high\u2011level discussions this week with France on a proposed $39\u202fbillion (3.25\u202ftrillion\u202frupee) contract to acquire 114 Rafale fighter jets, a move that could become the country\u2019s largest-ever defence procurement if approved. The talks come as the Indian Air Force (IAF)<\/a> seeks to address a pressing shortfall in combat aircraft and strengthen its operational readiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent weeks, New Delhi has drafted a detailed proposal known as the \u201cStatement of Case\u201d that outlines the terms of the potential purchase. If the new proposal is cleared, the total Rafale fleet \u2014 including 26 Rafale-M jets ordered by the Indian Navy in 2025 to operate from carriers such as INS Vikrant (VT-XX) \u2014 would rise to 176 aircraft, substantially boosting India\u2019s aerial combat capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposed agreement envisages a blend of \u201cfly-away\u201d aircraft and local production.
