Medical teams and airport officials were deployed as soon as the aircraft touched down.

The plane landed safely at 11.51 am. Injured passengers received immediate attention, although airport authorities have not disclosed the exact number or severity of injuries.

Etihad Airways crew followed standard aviation safety protocols throughout the incident. The aircraft climbed to its planned cruising altitude of 35,000 feet while cabin service was in progress.

During this phase of flight, the aircraft encountered sudden and severe turbulence while flying over Brittany, France. The impact was strong enough for the flight crew to declare an emergency by squawking 7700, a universal signal indicating a general emergency. The aircraft descended rapidly to 10,000 feet before turning back toward its departure airport.

Passengers reported abrupt lateral movement followed by a sharp descent. Several individuals stated they were lifted from their seats due to the intensity of the turbulence. Cabin crew later described the event as unprecedented in their combined experience of more than a decade.

The aircraft landed back at Birmingham approximately 92 minutes after departure. Medical teams met the aircraft at a remote stand to assist injured passengers. While some travelers reported physical injuries, others described lasting psychological distress despite not requiring hospital treatment.

Unconfirmed passenger reports were suggesting the turbulence may have been caused by wake turbulence from another aircraft flying several miles ahead. No official confirmation has been issued regarding the cause.

Photo: Clément Alloing

Delta Flight Diverts After Midair Turbulence in the US

In a separate incident, a Delta Air Lines (DL) flight bound for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) was forced to divert after encountering significant midair turbulence over the United States.

Delta flight DL56 departed Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) at 16:30 local time on July 30, 2025, operating an Airbus A330-900. Approximately two hours into the scheduled nine-hour journey, conditions deteriorated rapidly, prompting the flight crew to initiate a diversion.

According to FlightRadar24 data, the aircraft departed at 22:45 UTC and landed safely at Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport (MSP) at 00:51 UTC. The aircraft, registered as N422DZ, is a 2.3-year-old widebody jet powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines.

The Delta aircraft landed at MSP at 19:45 local time, where emergency medical teams boarded the plane immediately. Of the 275 passengers and 13 crew members onboard, 25 passengers were transported to local hospitals for further evaluation and treatment.

Stay tuned with us.
