These changes preserve gate capacity while dramatically improving passenger flow.

Photo: By Cicku – Own work, CC0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=157440101

Passenger Experience and Design Features

The connector’s central atrium is designed to be both functional and visually distinctive. A glass ceiling spans the space, filling the area with natural light and offering clear views toward the gate areas.

This open design marks a notable shift for an airport traditionally known more for efficiency than architectural flair.

Additional upgrades include floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the airfield, partially glass jet bridges, and restrooms that maintain BWI’s award-winning standards. Local concession outlets are scheduled to open within the atrium, reinforcing a sense of place for travelers.

Maryland identity is also embedded in the design.
