DUBAI-<\/strong> Emirates (EK)<\/a> continues its decades-long effort to secure direct access to Berlin (BER), stating that a daily service between Dubai (DXB) and the German capital would strengthen eastern Germany\u2019s economy through job creation, tourism growth, and improved business mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline emphasises that it has been denied traffic rights to Berlin for more than thirty years despite what it calls clear and measurable benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etihad Airways (EY)<\/a> and Germany\u2019s Condor (DE)<\/a> have introduced a new partnership that expands Abu Dhabi (AUH) connections to Berlin, providing an additional long-haul option for German travellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reported by The National<\/a>, the development is expected to support demand across key markets and contribute to stronger aviation ties between both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emirates Pushes Berlin Flights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Emirates (EK) reiterated that Berlin Brandenburg Airport continues to face extremely limited long-haul access, with only a few intercontinental routes currently served.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A study by the German Aerospace Centre estimated that a daily Emirates flight to Berlin could create 500 jobs, attract 140,000 new passengers annually, and generate 55,000 additional overnight stays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline added that if the federal government is committed to supporting the economic recovery of eastern Germany, granting traffic rights would be a cost-neutral, pragmatic step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emirates currently operates to Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, and D\u00fcsseldorf. Under a 1994 bilateral agreement, adding Berlin would require dropping one of these four cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the launch of its Frankfurt flights in 1987, Emirates has gradually expanded its German network in line with passenger demand, yet its push for Berlin access has been repeatedly restricted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lufthansa (LH)<\/a> previously argued that allowing Emirates into Berlin would create an imbalance in the allocation of slots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emirates countered that western Germany benefits from about 180 daily long-haul departures, while Berlin and eastern federal states remain significantly underserved. This imbalance, rooted in historical divisions, continues to affect the region\u2019s economic potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passenger traffic at Berlin Brandenburg Airport reached 25.47 million in 2024, a 10.4 percent increase from the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, industry leaders maintain that the airport still lacks sufficient global connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robert Ruckel, vice president of the Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated that Berlin has long-haul access comparable to a provincial town, which limits trade fairs, tourism development, and business settlement opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Competition, Connectivity, and Network Benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Emirates noted that Eurowings<\/a> and Condor currently operate seasonal narrow-body flights between Berlin and Dubai, but these services cover only a small part of the route\u2019s demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Condor chief executive Peter Gerber added that competition improves affordability and market performance, while a lack of competition results in higher prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline emphasised the value of its global network, which offers 83 onward destinations from Dubai: 42 in Asia, 22 in Africa, 12 in the Middle East, and 7 in Australasia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notably, 58 of these destinations are not served by Lufthansa from Frankfurt or Munich, underscoring the complementary nature of Emirates\u2019 offering for German travellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berlin Brandenburg Airport, opened in October 2020 after multiple delays, is served by several Middle Eastern carriers including Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Egypt Air, Royal Jordanian, and flynas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these services, stakeholders continue to call for broader market access and more Open Skies agreements to support Germany\u2019s export-driven economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etihad and Condor Strengthen Abu Dhabi Links<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Etihad Airways (EY) and Condor (DE) have introduced a strategic partnership designed to expand direct access between Germany and Abu Dhabi (AUH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Airline currently operates flights to Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC), and Dusseldorf (DUS). Under the new codeshare agreement, Condor will begin daily Frankfurt\u2013Abu Dhabi flights in May 2026 using Airbus A330 aircraft, followed by daily Berlin\u2013Abu Dhabi flights in June 2026 using Airbus A320 aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etihad stated that Germany remains a vital market, and adding Berlin provides a direct capital-to-capital connection that aligns with growing passenger demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new services will extend travel options to Etihad\u2019s network, covering destinations across the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
