The airline says the incident affected customer confidence, but bookings have now stabilised as it prepares visible improvements across its fleet.

The carrier, owned by the Tata Group, is pushing ahead with a long-term overhaul of its operations after delays in receiving new aircraft. The leadership expects passengers to see major changes from 2026 as refreshed jets enter service.

Air India prepares large-scale fleet and service upgrades

Air India (AI) confirmed that more than 80 percent of its international flights will be operated by upgraded aircraft by the end of 2026. The airline has faced supply chain challenges that stalled deliveries of 28 new jets, now reduced to zero received so far.

In response, the company accelerated refurbishment of its existing narrow-body aircraft used on domestic and short-haul routes, with nearly 80 percent already completed.

Long-haul refurbishments will take more time. All Boeing 787 Dreamliners used on routes to Europe and Australia are scheduled for upgrades through mid-2027, while Boeing 777 modifications will continue until 2028.

With these changes, Air India expects to reintroduce enhanced services to Europe, Australasia, and major Southeast Asian destinations starting in 2026.

The airline also showcased its new training academy in Gurugram, a facility built with more than 200 million dollars of investment. Air India reports that safety systems have been strengthened after the Ahmedabad (AMD) crash, which led to regulatory scrutiny and several show-cause notices to senior management. Initial assessments did not find issues with aircraft condition or engineering standards.

Photo: By Clayton Tang – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=26824337

Premium cabins and lounge development

Air India is expanding its premium offering as part of the refresh. New Airbus A350s will introduce first-class cabins, supported by redesigned business class and economy layouts.

The A320 family will also receive upgraded interiors to align with the broader brand renewal.

Lounge development is another priority. Air India plans new or improved spaces in Delhi (DEL), Mumbai (BOM), Dubai (DXB), London (LHR), New York (JFK), and San Francisco (SFO). These facilities aim to create a more consistent experience across the network as refurbished long-haul jets enter operation.

Safety processes and regulatory oversight

Following the fatal Boeing 787 crash shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad (AMD), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation intensified its oversight of Air India. Multiple notices were issued regarding procedural lapses, prompting the airline to reinforce internal safety checks.

Air India stated that early findings show no technical fault with the aircraft and that additional measures have been introduced to strengthen compliance and operational discipline.

Despite ongoing aircraft delivery delays, Air India expects to receive about 26 new jets next year, including six long-haul aircraft. The carrier remains committed to its multi-year transformation plan intended to rebuild trust, modernise its fleet, and improve service quality across all cabins.

Stay tuned with us.
