The facility serves major carriers, including United Airlines (UA), and offers expanded connectivity for the region.

Skytrax awarded Terminal A its top five-star rating following an extensive audit of facilities, operations, and passenger experience at Newark Liberty (EWR). The honor reflects survey responses collected worldwide between August 2023 and March 2024.

Skytrax selected Terminal A for its strong performance across key touchpoints such as check-in, arrivals, transfers, retail, security, and boarding. Newark Liberty became the second airport managed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to receive Skytrax’s highest terminal honor. LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B achieved the same recognition in 2023.

The award was announced during the 2024 Skytrax World Airport Awards in Frankfurt. Senior leaders from the Port Authority were present to accept the recognition, underscoring the significance of the achievement within the global aviation sector.

Terminal A’s design, amenities, and operational standards were repeatedly noted by Skytrax as standout strengths. Leadership from the State of New Jersey and the Port Authority highlighted the terminal as a symbol of the agency’s broader transformation of regional airports and a source of pride for travelers and residents.

Major Investment and Passenger Growth

Terminal A represents a $2.7 billion investment, the largest single project ever undertaken by the Port Authority in New Jersey. The terminal opened in phases throughout 2023, replacing the original fifty-year-old Terminal A.

Within its first year, the new terminal served 15 million passengers. This number far exceeded historical totals from the previous building.

The new one-million-square-foot facility offers modern amenities, advanced technology, and a strong focus on efficient passenger flow.

Newark Liberty International Airport; Photo: Victoria Airport Parking

Passenger Experience and Unique Amenities

The terminal features expanded dining and retail options sourced from both national brands and local businesses.

Travelers benefit from digital wayfinding, modern check-in systems, and spacious gate areas that support smoother boarding.

Amenities include a sensory room designed for neurodivergent passengers, a children’s play zone, local artwork installations, and a lending library curated by a New Jersey student. These additions were cited by both auditors and passengers as key elements that improved the travel experience.

Industry Recognition and Sustainability Milestones

Terminal A has collected several additional awards. UNESCO recognized the project with a Prix Versailles Special Prize for its exterior design.

The terminal also earned LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council for meeting high environmental standards.

The American Society of Civil Engineers in New Jersey named Terminal A the 2023 Project of the Year.
