Yet exceptions erode vigilance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aircraft frequently arrive with inoperative auxiliary power units (APUs), requiring one engine to remain running at the gate until ground power connects. Crews sometimes internalize \u201cplane at gate = engines off\u201d even when that assumption is false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cockpit visibility of personnel near the engines is extremely limited, especially at night or in poor weather. A Piedmont Airlines (PT) ramp agent approached the idling left engine to place cones and was ingested. The NTSB cited repeated close approaches despite warnings and cannabis-related cognitive impairment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>June 23, 2023 \u2013<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationa2z.com\/index.php\/tag\/delta-air-lines\/\">Delta Air Lines (DL)<\/a> flight 1111 from Los Angeles (LAX) to San Antonio (SAT) taxied to the gate on one engine. A ground worker was fatally injured; authorities later classified the event as suicide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tug-and-aircraft-movement-fatalities\">Tug and Aircraft Movement Fatalities<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>January 27, 2025 \u2013<\/strong> An American Airlines (AA) wing walker at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) was run over from behind by the pushback tug after guiding the aircraft away from the gate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Older cases include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1989 \u2013<\/strong> An American Airlines (AA) ramp guide stumbled into nose gear during pushback at Luis Mu\u00f1oz Mar\u00edn International Airport (SJU), San Juan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1992 \u2013<\/strong> US Airways (US) worker killed by tug at LaGuardia Airport (LGA).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1997 \u2013<\/strong> Delta Air Lines (DL) wing walker at John F.
