It is the first time in 25 years that the market has access to a nonstop option, with Air India last operating the route in 2000, Simple Flying flagged.

Despite the gap, demand remained strong, with nearly 60,000 round-trip passengers between the two cities in the 12 months ending September 2025.

The new flights operate on a 338-seat Boeing 787-9 in a two-class layout. IndiGo uses wide-body aircraft on damp lease from Norse Atlantic Airways, which has been shifting away from scheduled operations.

The cabin includes 56 IndiGoStretch seats and 282 Economy seats, offering extended comfort on what is now IndiGo’s longest route.

Because the airline cannot transit Pakistan’s airspace, the flight requires a longer routing. This adds time and fuel burn and reduces competitiveness against one-stop options through the Gulf or Europe.

Even so, the nonstop value proposition is clear for passengers seeking direct travel between Northern India and Northern England.

IndiGo's new route has officially touched down in Manchester, connecting the North to Delhi🇬🇧✈️🇮🇳

On Saturday, we welcomed the inaugural flight, direct between Manchester and Delhi.

Passengers and crew enjoyed pre-flight celebrations and complimentary treats before boarding… pic.twitter.com/Tqm0iIUwrg
— Manchester Airport (@manairport) November 17, 2025

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport serves as IndiGo’s core long-haul gateway.
