Passenger traffic grew 4.6 percent while capacity increased 3 percent, raising the load factor to 87.7 percent.

Passenger numbers reached 20.8 million, an 8% increase. Yields fell 2.9 percent to 9.9 cents per revenue passenger-kilometre due to increased competition.

Cargo revenue slipped 31 million to 1.071 billion dollars, driven by a 4.1 percent decline in yields and a 0.9-point drop in load factor to 56.5 percent. Cargo capacity grew faster than loads, reinforcing pressure across the freight segment.

Group expenditure rose 170 million to 8.872 billion dollars. Non-fuel costs increased by 353 million because of capacity expansion and inflation, while net fuel cost fell by 183 million as fuel prices contracted by 12.7 percent.

Higher fuel volumes uplifted and a shift from hedging gains to losses partly offset the savings. These movements lifted operating profit to 803 million dollars, up 7 million year-on-year.

Net profit for the half fell to 239 million dollars, a drop of 503 million. Interest income decreased by 103 million after lower cash balances and rate cuts. The Group’s share of results from associated companies fell by 417 million, mainly reflecting Air India’s losses, which were not recorded in the previous year.

Photo: Robin HARDY

Second Quarter Results

Second quarter operating profit increased 73 million to 398 million dollars, supported by record revenue of 4.885 billion. Passenger flown revenue rose 2.2 percent to 3.924 billion, with traffic up 5.1 percent. Yields weakened 3 percent, limiting gains. Cargo revenue fell by 21 million as both loads and yields declined.

Expenditure for the quarter grew by 32 million to 4.486 billion. Non-fuel costs rose by 107 million from higher capacity and inflation. Net fuel cost fell by 75 million due to lower prices, offset by increased volumes and a hedging loss.

Quarterly net profit stood at 52 million, down 238 million from last year because of weaker contributions from associated companies and lower interest income.

Balance Sheet and Liquidity

Shareholders’ equity reached 15.5 billion dollars, slightly below March levels. Total debt fell by 2 billion, improving the debt-equity ratio from 0.82 to 0.70. Convertible bond conversions added 150 million shares, leaving 136 million dollars in outstanding bonds.

Cash and bank balances declined 1.8 billion to 6.4 billion dollars after dividend payments and debt repayments.
