More than a dozen cross-border air routes between the United States and Mexico are being grounded this weekend under a US Department of Transportation (DOT) order targeting what it calls \u201cunfair aviation practices\u201d by Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move impacts 13 key services operated by Aerom\u00e9xico (AM), Volaris (Y4), and Viva Aerobus (VB), effectively cutting several U.S.\u2013Mexico City (MEX, NLU) connections and affecting thousands of travelers across both nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US Suspends 13 Mexico Flight Routes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The DOT\u2019s directive marks one of the most significant shifts in U.S.\u2013Mexico air travel since the two countries signed the 2015 Open Skies Air Transport Agreement<\/strong>. That agreement allowed airlines to freely determine routes, capacity, and pricing without government interference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, tensions have grown over the past few years as U.S. officials accuse Mexico of favoring its domestic carriers and restricting access for American airlines at key airports like Benito Ju\u00e1rez International Airport (MEX)<\/strong> and Felipe \u00c1ngeles International Airport (NLU)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DOT\u2019s ruling primarily targets Aerom\u00e9xico, Volaris, and Viva Aerobus. The order mandates the suspension of 13 flight routes by November 7, 2025, citing violations of competition laws and unfair slot allocation at Mexico City\u2019s main airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also includes a halt on all Mexican carrier operations between Felipe \u00c1ngeles International Airport (NLU)<\/strong> and any U.S. destination, effectively closing that corridor to Mexican operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. government argues that the three airlines\u2019 joint operations\u2014especially the Delta Air Lines (DL) and Aerom\u00e9xico (AM)<\/a> partnership\u2014distort competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DOT described their collaboration as \u201clegalized collusion,\u201d claiming it gave them a dominant 60 percent share of U.S.\u2013Mexico City passenger traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
