NORTH CHARLESTON-<\/strong> Boeing breaks ground on a major expansion at its South Carolina site, home to the 787 Dreamliner<\/a> program. The project boosts production to 10 airplanes per month by 2026, driven by surging global demand for the efficient widebody jet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This $1 billion investment near Charleston International Airport (CHS) creates over 1,000 jobs and upgrades facilities for assembly, painting, and interiors. Leaders from Boeing and South Carolina government hail the move as a boost to American manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing 787 Dreamliner Production Expansion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Boeing<\/a> invests more than $1 billion to expand its North Charleston campuses, announced in late 2024. The effort targets the 787 Dreamliner family, the best-selling widebody passenger airplane with over 2,250 orders from 90 global customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After delivering more than 1,200 units, Boeing holds a backlog of nearly 1,000 airplanes, including 300 added this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Construction involves a joint venture between HITT Contracting and BE&K Building Group. Workers log over 6.2 million hours and number more than 2,500 during the build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key additions include a new final assembly building, matching the current 1.2 million sq. ft structure. This facility houses airplane production positions, support areas, and office space. Upgrades also extend to the Interiors Responsibility Center, where teams produce many 787 interior components. These enhancements support higher output rates amid strong market needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing’s Commercial Market Outlook forecasts demand for over 7,800 new widebody airplanes in the next two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 787 Dreamliner leads with its fuel efficiency and versatility, serving airlines worldwide. Customers order variants like the 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 for long-haul routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Carolina’s site handles the full production cycle: fabrication, assembly, and delivery. Boeing started operations here in 2009 and now employs over 8,200 people across North Charleston and Orangeburg campuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
