AUCKLAND\u2013<\/strong> Qantas Airways (QF)<\/a> is set to unveil its newly redesigned lounge at Auckland International Airport (AKL), while simultaneously initiating a large-scale redevelopment of its flagship lounge in Sydney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new facility at AKL is scheduled to open on 17 December 2025, just ahead of the busy holiday travel period. At the same time, the upgrade of the Sydney International Business Lounge at Sydney Airport (SYD)<\/a> will begin its next phase from 8 December 2025, with full completion expected in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Auckland Lounge Details<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The redesigned Auckland lounge expands seating capacity significantly and integrates a single, unified \u201cpremium lounge\u201d concept by merging former business-class and first-class footprints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upgrade, developed in collaboration with design partners including Caon Design Office and Akin Atelier, features finishes and furniture sourced locally in New Zealand to reflect natural beauty and regional craftsmanship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lounge will serve trans-Tasman traffic as well as customers on the direct Auckland-to-New York route via QF3\/QF4. According to Qantas, seating will increase from 244 to approximately 340 seats, giving a notable uplift in capacity ahead of the peak travel season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move forms part of Qantas\u2019s global lounge investment programme that targets premium travellers and business-class passengers with enhanced amenities and larger capacities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sydney Upgrade Scope<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Sydney, the upgrade of the International Business Lounge at Terminal 1 will increase seating capacity by over 30 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlights include a 150 square-metre outdoor terrace, a show kitchen, USB-C power stations, and wireless charging at more than 80 per cent of seats. The design theme draws inspiration from the Blue Mountains and Bondi Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is timed to be completed ahead of Qantas\u2019s long-haul initiative, Project Sunrise, which will operate ultra-long-haul flights from Sydney to London and New York. During construction, customers will be accommodated in a temporary lounge in Terminal 1 or at the Plaza Premium lounge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategic Implications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Qantas\u2019s dual focus on Auckland and Sydney underscores its strategy to strengthen its premium travel offering across the Tasman and globally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By opening the new AKL lounge ahead of the peak travel period, the airline ensures improved experience for high-value passengers and aligns capacity with growing demand on trans-Tasman routes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the Sydney redevelopment cements the carrier\u2019s positioning at its primary hub in advance of future ultra-long-haul services. The concurrent upgrades reflect an elevated commitment to lounge environments as a differentiator in premium travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passengers holding lounge access rights at Auckland during the construction phase will be redirected to alternative facilities, including those of partner airlines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, in Sydney, some travellers may experience temporary relocation while the renovation is underway. From 8 December 2025, the existing business lounge will enter phase 2 of construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
