WASHINGTON-<\/strong> The US Department of Transportation may close parts of the national airspace if the ongoing government shutdown continues, Secretary Sean Duffy said Tuesday. The move could lead to widespread flight delays and cancellations, affecting major carriers including American Airlines (AA)<\/a> and Delta Air Lines (DL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a press conference in Washington, Duffy warned that safety could no longer be guaranteed at current staffing levels. With air traffic controllers working unpaid, critical operations at airports like New York\u2019s LaGuardia (LGA) and Chicago O\u2019Hare (ORD) are becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US Airspace Closure Fear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The federal shutdown, already the longest in U.S. history at 35 days, has placed immense pressure on the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)<\/a> and air traffic control services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Duffy said that while commercial aviation remains safe, staffing shortages have forced officials to reduce flight traffic to maintain operational safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over 10,000 flights within, into, or out of the U.S. were delayed last weekend, and an additional 4,700 flights were affected on Monday, according to FlightAware. Duffy revealed that 46% of these delays stemmed from staffing issues\u2014nearly ten times higher than the usual 5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aviation experts describe the potential closure of sections of U.S. airspace as \u201cunprecedented.\u201d Unlike past events such as the 9\/11 shutdown or weather-related restrictions, limiting airspace for staffing reasons would be a first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sheldon Jacobson, aviation security expert at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, noted that even a partial shutdown could have a domino effect, disrupting travel nationwide due to the hub-and-spoke system connecting regional and major airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unpaid Controllers Under Growing Financial Pressure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As the shutdown drags on, more air traffic controllers are calling in sick, intensifying the strain on the system. Many have gone weeks without pay. Duffy urged controllers to avoid side jobs, citing safety concerns that arise when employees are fatigued or distracted by financial stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nick Daniels, President of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, said controllers are facing dire personal circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a news conference at LaGuardia Airport (LGA)<\/a>, Daniels described stories of employees struggling to afford essentials, including medicine for their families. \u201cAir traffic controllers need 100% focus, 100% of the time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. Travel Association echoed those concerns, warning that the shutdown threatens to upend travel plans during the busy Thanksgiving holiday. The group noted that in 2024, roughly 20 million passengers traveled during that week, emphasizing that worsening staffing shortages could severely disrupt air travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If airspace restrictions occur, the economic impact could ripple far beyond aviation. Flight delays affect cargo, tourism, and business operations nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts warn that closing key hubs like New York (JFK, LGA), Atlanta (ATL), or Los Angeles (LAX) would effectively slow the entire network, demonstrating how deeply interconnected U.S. airspace has become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until Congress resolves the funding impasse, the Department of Transportation faces mounting pressure to balance safety with operational capacity. As Duffy stated, \u201cWe will restrict the airspace when we feel it\u2019s not safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
