CHICAGO-<\/strong> United Airlines (UA)<\/a> has officially returned to Thailand after more than a decade, relaunching its service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)<\/a> and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) via Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The daily flight is operated by the airline\u2019s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner<\/a> fleet, accommodating 257 passengers across three cabin classes. This comes at a time when the United States has seen visitor numbers to Thailand rise by around 5 % year-on-year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Airlines Returns to Bangkok<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

United\u2019s inaugural flight, UA 820, departed LAX at 23:15 on October 24 and arrived at BKK at 11:25 on October 26 following a scheduled stop in HKG. The return flight, UA 821, leaves BKK at 16:55 and arrives back at LAX at 20:25 (via HKG). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Onboard, the 787-9 features 48 business-class seats, 21 premium economy, and 188 economy seats (of which 39 are Economy Plus). This relaunch restores U.S.-Thailand connectivity lost when United and Delta Air Lines ended Bangkok services in 2014. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

United\u2019s new route leverages fifth-freedom rights approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), enabling the carrier to operate LA\u2013HKG\u2013BKK and back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move positions United as the only U.S. airline serving Bangkok via this one-stop routing and underscores the carrier\u2019s broader expansion into the Asia-Pacific market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United\u2019s senior network executive, Patrick Quayle, said that by adding the flight, the carrier was \u201cchanging the way people think about where they travel \u2014 by offering the greatest access to see and explore the world.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry and Regulatory Backdrop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Under the Chicago Convention\u2019s \u201cfreedoms of the air\u201d, fifth-freedom rights allow airlines to carry passengers between two foreign countries on a flight that begins or ends in the carrier\u2019s home state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DOT\u2019s approval in April enabled United to deploy the one-stop HKG\u2013BKK service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Thai civil-aviation regulators, strengthening Category 1 status with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) earlier in the year laid the groundwork for U.S. carriers to resume services and reinforced regulatory alignment in long-haul operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thailand\u2019s tourism body and airline executives welcomed the return. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, was quoted as having said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
