DUBAI-<\/strong> Emirates Airline (EK)<\/a> marked its 40th anniversary this week, revisiting the humble yet historic beginnings of a global aviation giant. The spotlight turned once again to Captain Fazle Ghani, the Pakistani pilot who commanded the airline\u2019s first-ever flight from Dubai (DXB) to Karachi (KHI).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 25, 1985, Captain Ghani took off on Emirates Flight EK600<\/strong>, marking not only the airline\u2019s inaugural journey but also the start of a four-decade story of ambition, collaboration, and excellence that now spans six continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emirates Celebrates 40 Years of First Flight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before the first flight, the UAE government enlisted Pakistan\u2019s support to help establish its new national airline. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) provided crucial technical expertise, leasing two aircraft \u2014 an Airbus A300B4-200 and a Boeing 737-300<\/a> \u2014 and dispatching a skilled team to Dubai, the Gulf News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among them was Captain Fazle Ghani, then a senior PIA pilot, appointed as Project Director and Chief Pilot for Emirates\u2019 inaugural operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arriving in Dubai on October 1, 1985, Captain Ghani met with Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum and Maurice Flanagan, Emirates\u2019 first Managing Director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the next few weeks, pilots and engineers from Pakistan worked tirelessly to conduct test flights, fine-tune procedures, and ensure operational readiness for launch day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite limited resources, the team\u2019s determination was unwavering. Ghani later recalled the early challenges with humor, describing how some crew members wore oversized uniforms and mismatched caps \u2014 small details that did little to dampen their focus on safety and punctuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choosing Karachi (KHI) as Emirates\u2019 first route was both practical and symbolic. The short Dubai\u2013Karachi leg reflected Pakistan\u2019s instrumental role in helping the UAE establish its airline and the close regional ties between the two nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flight EK600, piloted by Captain Ghani, departed Dubai (DXB)<\/a> and safely touched down in Karachi, making aviation history. Later that same day, another Emirates flight to Mumbai (BOM), commanded by Captain Ejaz ul Haq, completed the launch schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PIA\u2019s then-chief, Air Marshal Arshad Malik, later described Captain Ghani as the \u201clead founder pilot of Emirates,\u201d acknowledging his leadership and professionalism in setting the tone for the airline\u2019s future success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Years later, in 2018, Emirates invited Captain Ghani as a guest of honor when the airline operated its first-ever Airbus A380<\/a> flight to Pakistan, landing in Islamabad (ISB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standing beside the world\u2019s largest passenger aircraft, the veteran pilot expressed pride and gratitude for having witnessed the airline\u2019s growth from two leased planes to a global powerhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Captain Fazle Ghani passed away in Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, after a prolonged illness, but his legacy endures in the Emirates\u2019 continued success and the many pilots he helped train. His role remains a cornerstone in the airline\u2019s story \u2014 proof that great journeys begin with courage, vision, and collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
