While climbing through approximately 8,400 feet, the crew reported a left engine failure and declared a mayday to air traffic control.

According to radio communication transcripts, the flight crew confirmed the emergency, reporting 156 people on board and roughly 35,900 pounds of fuel remaining. Controllers directed the aircraft into a holding pattern to allow the pilots to complete their checklists before initiating a return.

The crew requested and received clearance for an ILS approach to runway 22L. After a stable approach, the aircraft landed safely and was met by emergency vehicles for inspection.

Delta confirmed that the passengers and crew were safe, and maintenance teams began a post-flight evaluation of the affected engine.

The ATC recordings show clear and composed coordination between the Delta pilots and New York air traffic controllers throughout the incident.

<iframe title="Engine failure in flight.
