In the first phase, Lufthansa will fit the lower deck with 48 Allegris business class seats, maintaining the same seating capacity as before.

However, the upper deck will temporarily retain the older business class layout, which features 32 seats arranged in a 2-2 configuration.

For now, the first-class cabin in the aircraft’s nose will remain unchanged as well. This means that for a period of time, passengers onboard the same aircraft could find both old and new business class products operating side by side.

Such a configuration is highly unusual in the airline industry, as carriers typically standardize cabin layouts across each aircraft type.

The second phase, planned for 2027 or 2028, will see the upper deck finally receive the new Allegris business class. Lufthansa will also introduce its next-generation Allegris first class seats at that time, replacing the current configuration with a smaller, more exclusive layout likely featuring just three suites, OMAAT reported.

<img decoding="async" width="1440" height="617" src="https://aviationa2z.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/image-63.png" alt="Lufthansa (LH) has announced a delay in the debut of its new Allegris cabin, now set for early 2024. Its curved nose and narrower upper deck make it difficult to install consistent premium seating products across both levels.

The lower deck, which offers ample width, can easily accommodate the new Allegris layout.

But the upper deck, which is more like a single-aisle aircraft in width, requires Lufthansa’s engineering team to adjust the design, likely leading to a 1-1 seat configuration instead of the traditional 2-2 layout.

This change will significantly reduce the number of business class seats on the upper deck, but it will also improve privacy and comfort for premium passengers.

Meanwhile, the decision to cut the first-class cabin from eight seats to three marks a shift toward exclusivity, aligning Lufthansa’s product more closely with top-tier competitors like Emirates (EK) and Singapore Airlines (SQ).

Despite the challenges, Lufthansa’s engineers believe that updating the Boeing 747-8 fleet is worth the complexity. The aircraft remains a passenger favorite for its quiet ride, large windows, and nostalgic appeal.

Lufthansa Allegris First Class; Photo: Lufthansa

Bottom Line

By 2028, the airline aims to offer a consistent Allegris experience across the A350, 787, and 747-8 fleets.

The process may be complicated, but once completed, Lufthansa will have one of the most advanced and varied premium products in the skies.

For aviation enthusiasts and frequent flyers, the move ensures the beloved “Queen of the Skies” will continue flying well into the next decade—with a cabin worthy of its legend.

Stay tuned with us.
