For passengers in Armenia, Istanbul provides connections to Turkish Airlines’ global network spanning over 120 countries. The reverse applies too – Turkish travelers would get direct access to Armenia for the first time in years.

The flight announcement aligns with reported improvements in Turkey-Armenia relations recently. There have been peace mediation efforts and some reduction in barriers between the countries. As of October 2025, the carrier flies nonstop to a massive 287 destinations. Turkish serves 46 domestic destinations and 241 international destinations across 125 countries. That has to be one of the airlines serving the highest number of countries in the world — if not the highest.

Armenia would become the 126th country in Turkish Airlines’ network once Yerevan flights begin. The carrier has been expanding its reach in its global coverage. The airline has been particularly strengthening in the regions where it already has a strong presence. The South Caucasus now gets more complete coverage with Yerevan joining existing services to Tbilisi and Baku.

Istanbul’s geographic position makes it a natural connecting point between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Turkish Airlines has been leveraging this advantage aggressively. The airline serves destinations that many European carriers abandoned or never operated. African cities, Central Asian capitals, and Middle Eastern destinations all feature prominently in the network.

The sheer scale creates its own advantages. More destinations mean more connecting opportunities. Turkish Airlines is part of the Star Alliance, which adds another layer of connectivity.

Passengers can earn and redeem miles across the alliance. The airline also has codeshare agreements, which extend the network even further beyond Turkish Airlines’ own flights.

Photo: Nabil Molinari | Flickr

Bottom Line

For the airline, these additions continue its growth trajectory. The carrier has consistently added destinations and frequencies over the past decade. The 2033 Vision suggests this expansion will accelerate.

Yerevan particularly represents a shift in regional connectivity. Timisoara adds depth to Turkish Airlines’ Romanian presence.

Timisoara is 3rd Romanian destination for Turkish Airlines. Alongside serving the capital Bucharest, Turkish is expanding into regional cities with economic importance. That approach has worked in other countries where Turkish Airlines operates multiple destinations.

More route announcements are likely to follow. With 800 aircraft targeted by 2033, Turkish Airlines needs destinations to deploy that capacity. Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia all offer expansion opportunities that the carrier has been gradually pursuing.

Stay tuned with us.
