DALLAS-<\/strong> Southwest Airlines (WN)<\/a> is considering significant changes, including potential Europe flights from hubs such as Baltimore (BWI), Nashville (BNA), and Phoenix (PHX).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chief executive Robert Jordan confirmed the airline is reviewing new service models that could extend beyond its current Boeing 737<\/a> only fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on 9 September at the US Chamber of Commerce Global Aviation Summit in Washington, DC (DCA), Jordan emphasized that serving Europe would require a different aircraft type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted no timeline is set, but said Southwest remains open to rethinking long-standing policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southwest Plans New First Class<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For decades, Southwest has built its reputation on simplicity, low costs, and a single fleet model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jordan, CEO of Southwest Airlines, now acknowledges that it is re-examining elements once considered untouchable, including new first class, lounges, true premium seating, and long haul destinations beyond 737 range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not promising those things\u2026 Everything is on the table at Southwest,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline has already moved away from core traditions. It began charging for checked bags this year, plans to introduce assigned seating in 2025, and is adding \u201cpremium\u201d extra legroom seats across its Boeing 737 aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These steps mark a clear shift toward attracting higher yield passengers who expect more than basic service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jordan noted that millions of customers would welcome the ability to fly Southwest to Europe. However, the Boeing 737 MAX<\/a> does not have the range for transatlantic flights, forcing the airline to consider alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Airbus A321XLR<\/a>, with its 4,700nm capability, is already being used by competitors for long-haul narrowbody service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aircraft Options and Market Context<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Jordan explained that entering Europe would require either a widebody or a new long-range narrowbody. He admitted a widebody might be too ambitious at first, while future aircraft programs could present more practical options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boeing is weighing both a true 737 replacement and a larger narrowbody similar to a modernized 757, designed for missions like transatlantic routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not ruling out anything in terms of what can serve that mission at this point,\u201d Jordan added, signaling an open approach to evaluating fleet strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
