This triggered a cabin altitude warning and caused a brief drop in altitude, leading to panic among passengers, including four children on board.

According to officials, the flight crew immediately followed standard operating procedures and requested priority landing clearance. Air traffic control in Srinagar granted the request, allowing the aircraft to make a safe landing without further complications.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) was informed of the event and has initiated a technical inspection of the aircraft. Engineers are now assessing the cause of the cabin altitude warning and sudden descent.

Such checks are routine in cases where aircraft experience in-flight anomalies, ensuring safety protocols are upheld before the aircraft is cleared for future operations.

While in-flight technical issues can create anxiety among passengers, commercial aircraft are equipped with multiple systems and redundancies to handle such situations.

Emergency landings as a precautionary measure are a standard part of global aviation safety practices. The DGCA’s ongoing inspection will provide clarity on the root cause, ensuring corrective measures are implemented if necessary.

Photo: avgeekwithlens/ Harsh Tekriwal

SpiceJet Official Remarks

SpiceJet confirmed the technical issue, noting that the aircraft experienced a rapid descent during approach due to a rise in cabin altitude. In its statement, the airline emphasized that the crew acted swiftly, carrying out all required checks and procedures before requesting priority landing at Srinagar (SXR).

The airline further added that passengers and crew disembarked normally and no medical assistance was required. Airport authorities were alerted in advance and activated emergency procedures.

The incident involved flight SG9046, which landed safely at Chennai (MAA) without injuries. Officials later confirmed damage to wheel number two, though the aircraft remained otherwise intact.

The issue began during the aircraft’s approach when the pilot identified a tyre problem and notified Chennai (MAA) airport control. Emergency teams were positioned on standby as the flight landed. Upon inspection, wheel number two was found damaged, with fragments of tyre material visible near the left interior section.

All passengers and crew exited the aircraft without complications. Authorities confirmed there were no injuries, and the aircraft was secured for further checks.

Earlier in the journey, Jaipur (JAI) Air Traffic Control had discovered tyre debris on the runway after the aircraft’s departure. They immediately informed the SpiceJet (SG) crew.

After reviewing all onboard systems and finding them normal, the crew decided to continue the flight to Chennai (MAA).

Stay tuned with us.
