Now, an oceanographer offers a scientific explanation.

Dr Simon Boxall, a researcher at the University of Southampton, says that rogue waves, not otherworldly forces, could be responsible for disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle (BDA). His findings challenge long-standing myths around this stretch of ocean between Florida (MIA), Puerto Rico (SJU), and Bermuda (BDA).

Photo: Raleigh-Durham International Airport

Bermuda Triangle Mystery Almost Solved

Rogue waves, also called extreme storm waves, are towering walls of water that can rise up to 100 feet (30 metres). These waves are abnormally steep, often appearing without warning and from unexpected directions.

According to Dr Boxall, a ship caught in such conditions could sink within minutes, leaving no time to send a distress call.

One of the most infamous vanishings in the Bermuda Triangle was the USS Cyclops in 1918. The 542-foot American naval ship disappeared with 306 crew members while traveling from Salvador, Brazil, to Baltimore, without leaving a trace.

Dr Boxall argues that rogue waves could have easily overwhelmed the vessel. His team built a scale model of the Cyclops to study its response to such waves, concluding that the ship’s flat base and size made it highly vulnerable.

Dr Boxall explains that rogue waves can suspend a ship between peaks, causing the hull to snap under pressure. Waves in excess of 30 metres have been recorded, powerful enough to break large vessels in half, the Daily Mail UK reported.

Photo: Credits to Creator

The Bermuda Triangle’s Reputation

The Bermuda Triangle is bounded by Miami (MIA), Bermuda (BDA), and Puerto Rico (SJU). Over the years, its reputation as a zone of mystery grew after reports of vanishing aircraft and ghost ships.

However, many scientists argue that the Triangle’s record is not unusual compared to other heavily travelled regions of the ocean.

The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) states that there is no evidence of abnormal disappearance rates in the area. Insurance data from Lloyd’s of London also shows that losses in the Bermuda Triangle are no higher than elsewhere.

Instead, researchers point to natural explanations. The Caribbean has challenging navigation routes due to shallow waters, unpredictable storms, and a high density of islands. These factors increase the risks for both ships and planes, without the need for supernatural theories.

Photo: PxHere

What Science Tells Us About Rogue Waves

Rogue waves form when multiple smaller waves combine, sometimes intensified by storms pushing energy in different directions.

This creates unusually large and dangerous swells. Unlike typical waves, rogue waves can strike from unexpected angles, making them nearly impossible for sailors to anticipate.

While scientists continue to study how these waves develop, what is clear is their destructive power. Ships of all sizes can be affected, and the larger the vessel, the more vulnerable it may be due to structural stresses.

Photo: PICRYL

A Mystery Grounded in Reality

Although conspiracy theories about the Bermuda Triangle remain popular, the evidence strongly points to environmental and navigational causes.

Rogue waves, treacherous waters, and severe weather provide credible explanations for accidents.

The supposed mystery is more likely a combination of natural hazards and human error, rather than anything supernatural.

Stay tuned with us.
