FORT WORTH-<\/strong> An American Airlines (AA)<\/a> captain has filed a lawsuit against the Allied Pilots Association (APA) after his access to the union\u2019s internal message board was revoked following posts supporting a potential merger with the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case underscores a deeper divide within American Airlines pilots, based primarily out of Dallas\/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), over whether to maintain an independent union or pursue a merger with the larger national pilots\u2019 association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American Pilot Sues Union<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The dispute reflects a long-running internal battle among American Airlines pilots. On one side are members who favor preserving the APA, a union founded in 1963 after the carrier\u2019s pilots broke away from ALPA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the APA represents around 16,000 pilots at American Airlines. On the other side are pilots who see strategic and bargaining advantages in rejoining ALPA, which represents pilots at most major U.S. airlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surveys among APA members have consistently indicated that a majority of pilots support exploring a merger. In 2022, under mounting pressure, APA\u2019s leadership authorized a survey in which 67% of respondents favored merger discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A committee recommended pursuing negotiations with ALPA, but the APA board of directors disbanded it within hours, effectively halting talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Efforts did not stop there. A new wave of merger-supporting candidates won leadership positions and secured a second pilot survey in 2023. This time, 58% supported continuing merger exploration, while 20% strongly opposed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Captain Mitchell Vasin, based in Phoenix (PHX), was nominated for a leadership position within APA. Vasin has been outspoken in favor of a merger with ALPA and used the internal message board to criticize APA leaders who resisted such moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, APA\u2019s attorney notified Vasin that his access to the forum had been suspended. APA argued his posts constituted bullying, a claim Vasin denies. He maintains that the suspension violated union members\u2019 rights to express opinions on union matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, Vasin filed suit in a Texas district court, alleging the APA had improperly silenced him. However, on Friday, he submitted a motion to dismiss the case with prejudice, ending the lawsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Internal leadership struggles have already influenced the debate. In October 2022, the then-APA president stepped aside following allegations that he attempted to interfere in local elections that might have affected the merger question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many pilots, the outcome is about more than representation. Supporters argue that joining ALPA could strengthen bargaining leverage and ensure broader political influence, while opponents fear a loss of independence and control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
