CHICAGO-<\/strong> A United Airlines (UA)<\/a> Boeing 787-9 from Newark (EWR) to Cape Town (CPT) makes a U-turn mid-flight due to a spoiler issue. The aircraft had already begun crossing the Atlantic when the crew declared an emergency and turned back to Newark Liberty International Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passengers were later informed by the captain that the aircraft had \u201clost part of a wing.\u201d Flight UA1122 landed safely back at EWR, and the aircraft remained grounded for over a day following the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United 787-9 makes U-Turn to Newark<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The incident occurred on August 3, involving United Airlines flight UA1122, operated by a Boeing 787-9 registered as N23983.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft departed Newark International Airport (EWR)<\/a> at 21:22 local time, 1 hour delay from its scheduled departure at 20:10, and was en route to Cape Town International Airport (CPT) when the issue was detected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to flight tracking data, the aircraft reached cruising altitude at flight level 330 when the crew identified a malfunction in the spoiler system approximately 250 nautical miles southeast of Newark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around 22:00, the crew initiated a return. The aircraft dumped fuel and safely landed on Newark\u2019s runway 22R at 23:37.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As reported by Simple Flying<\/a>, passengers aboard the flight noticed vibrations about 30 minutes into the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The captain informed them that a portion of the wing was missing, though it was later clarified that this referred to a spoiler panel issue. The aircraft returned safely after following standard checklists and emergency procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United 787-9 Dreamliner Grounded<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Following the incident, the flight was canceled, and the aircraft was removed from service for roughly 37 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After inspections and maintenance, the Boeing 787-9<\/a> resumed operations, initially flying a domestic segment from Newark to Houston. It was later scheduled for an international leg to Tokyo Narita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft involved is relatively new, delivered to United Airlines in September 2020. Despite its age, this was not the first technical issue it encountered in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just weeks before the August 3 incident, the same aircraft, N23983, was forced to return mid-flight while operating UA82 from Newark (EWR) to Delhi (DEL)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At cruising altitude over the Gulf of Maine, the flight crew declared an emergency due to a fault in the electronics cooling system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This issue, which affects avionics bay cooling, is critical to aircraft safety. The aircraft safely returned to Newark, where it was grounded for inspection. Although not directly related to the spoiler malfunction, the back-to-back issues raise concerns about recurring system alerts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In another incident involves a United Boeing 787-8 registered N27901 was on flight UA108 from Washington Dulles (IAD)<\/a> to Munich (MUC)<\/a>. Shortly after takeoff on July 31, the aircraft suffered a left engine failure while climbing through 5,000 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crew declared a mayday, dumped fuel, and returned safely to IAD. All 219 passengers and 11 crew disembarked without incident. United Airlines confirmed a mechanical issue and arranged alternate transportation for affected passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
