MIAMI\u2014<\/strong> The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) <\/a>has issued a renewed warning to air travelers after multiple incidents involving concealed animals were uncovered at major U.S. airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On separate occasions, TSA officers intercepted passengers attempting to smuggle live turtles through security at Miami International Airport (MIA)<\/strong> and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)<\/strong>. In both cases, the turtles were hidden within passengers’ clothing and detected during routine screening procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TSA Warns Travelers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first incident, which occurred in April at MIA<\/strong>, involved a woman attempting to board a flight with two live turtles tucked into her bra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The TSA (Transportation Security Administration)<\/strong> confirmed that the airport\u2019s Advanced Imaging Technology flagged an anomaly in the passenger\u2019s chest area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon inspection, officers discovered two turtles \u2014 one wrapped in medical tape, the other encased in plastic wrap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following TSA protocol, the Miami-Dade Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/strong>, U.S. Customs and Border Protection<\/strong>, and the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife<\/strong> were notified and responded to the scene. The reptiles were safely retrieved, and no harm was reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TSA later took to X (formerly Twitter)<\/strong> with a public message: \u201cWe\u2019re back with another desperate plea to stop hiding animals in weird places on your body before airport security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another Smuggling Attempt Uncovered in Newark<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In a separate case on March 7<\/strong> at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)<\/strong>, TSA officers intercepted a Pennsylvania man concealing a live turtle in his pants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a body scanner triggered an alarm, agents conducted a pat-down and discovered a five-inch turtle hidden in a blue towel in the passenger\u2019s groin area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man, identified as a resident of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania<\/strong>, voluntarily removed the animal when questioned. TSA officials turned the turtle over to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service<\/strong> and local animal control<\/strong> for further handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The passenger was denied boarding and escorted from the checkpoint by airport police, People.com<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas Carter, TSA\u2019s Federal Security Director for New Jersey<\/strong>, commended the officers for their professional handling of the situation, noting, \u201cWe\u2019ve seen travelers try to conceal knives and other weapons, but this is the first time we\u2019ve encountered a live turtle hidden down someone\u2019s pants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TSA urges passengers to check airline policies and federal guidelines before traveling with pets or exotic animals. Attempting to bypass these regulations can result in fines, denied boarding, or further legal consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency reiterates that all carry-on items and individuals are subject to thorough screening, and unusual concealment methods \u2014 even those involving live creatures \u2014 will be detected through advanced security technology and protocols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
