DELHI-<\/strong> Low-cost carrier (LCC) SpiceJet (SG)<\/a> has confirmed a lease agreement to induct five Boeing 737 aircraft by October 2025<\/strong>, enhancing capacity ahead of the winter travel surge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft will join under a damp lease model, with partial operational support from the lessor, helping SpiceJet expand service from major hubs including Chennai (MAA), Hyderabad (HYD), and Kolkata (CCU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SpiceJet to Lease Boeing 737<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

SpiceJet\u2019s decision to induct five Boeing 737 aircraft<\/a> comes as a tactical response to growing passenger demand expected in late 2025 through early summer 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline\u2019s current fleet stands at 53 aircraft<\/strong>, with the Boeing 737 model already comprising a significant share \u2014 including 737-700s, -800s, -900ERs, and MAX 8 variants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incoming aircraft will be added under a damp lease agreement<\/strong>, meaning the aircraft will be provided along with a partial crew, but key functions such as cabin service and overall operations will be handled by SpiceJet. This arrangement allows for quicker integration of aircraft into active service compared to full dry leases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the airline, this move is part of a broader plan to improve domestic and international connectivity while keeping operational costs optimized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Focus on Fleet Modernization and Growth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The current average age of SpiceJet\u2019s fleet is 14.4 years<\/strong>, with many Boeing 737-800s exceeding 18 years. The addition of newer or more efficient aircraft via leasing is expected to partially offset the aging fleet and enhance fuel efficiency and reliability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SpiceJet (SG) also operates De Havilland Canada DHC-8 Dash 8<\/strong> aircraft, mainly used on regional and short-haul routes, which make up 24 aircraft<\/strong> of its total current fleet. However, the Boeing 737 remains the backbone of its network, with 29 active and parked units in service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debojo Maharshi, Chief Business Officer at SpiceJet, noted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategic Goals<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The planned fleet expansion supports SpiceJet\u2019s dual focus on increasing capacity and enhancing the customer experience. With operations based out of Delhi (DEL)<\/strong> and key bases in Chennai (MAA), Hyderabad (HYD), and Kolkata (CCU)<\/strong>, the airline is targeting both metro and regional sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In parallel, the airline is engaged in active discussions with other lessors<\/strong> for additional aircraft, further reinforcing its ambition to scale up operations and reclaim market share amid growing competition in the Indian aviation market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of July 24, 2025, SpiceJet\u2019s total fleet history shows involvement with 186 aircraft<\/strong>, though only 53 are active or parked currently \u2014 reflecting the impact of previous restructurings and market adjustments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
