The program is designed to streamline connections by removing multiple processing steps for eligible travelers.

Previously, international arrivals at U.S. airports were required to:

Proceed to the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) hall.

Collect checked baggage and recheck it for the onward flight.

Clear TSA security again before accessing the domestic gates.

With OSS, connecting passengers can clear passport control at the arrival gate itself. There is no requirement to claim and recheck bags or undergo TSA screening a second time.

Checked luggage is automatically transferred to the connecting flight, maintaining strict security protocols endorsed by CBP and TSA.

This operational model significantly cuts connection times, reportedly by more than 50%, enhancing the passenger experience while maintaining security integrity, View from the Wing reported.

Photo: JFK Spotting

Eligibility and Process Details

Currently, OSS is only available to passengers arriving on AA51 from London Heathrow who have a connecting flight beyond DFW. In April, the carrier introduced international remote baggage screening (IRBS) for flights from Sydney (SYD) to Los Angeles (LAX).

While IRBS allows for checked bags to be automatically transferred beyond LAX, passengers must still clear immigration and undergo TSA screening — a distinction from the OSS model now trialed at DFW.

The OSS trial on the London–Dallas route is the first westbound implementation of this kind and marks a progressive shift in U.S. airport transit policy.

By reducing connection friction, American Airlines is enhancing DFW’s status as a major international hub and offering a competitive edge in the global travel network.

Stay tuned with us.
