ABU DHABI\u2014<\/strong> Etihad Airways (EY)<\/a> has indicated it is “too early” to determine if Air Arabia Abu Dhabi (3L), its joint venture with Air Arabia (G9), will acquire slots vacated by Wizz Air (5W)<\/a> at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH). This follows Wizz Air\u2019s announcement of suspending operations from Abu Dhabi starting September 1, 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to The National<\/em>, Etihad\u2019s CEO, Antonoaldo Neves, stated that Air Arabia Abu Dhabi\u2019s decision will depend on aircraft availability, pilot resources, and comprehensive market analysis before pursuing any of Wizz Air\u2019s former routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wizz Air (5W), the Hungarian low-cost carrier, cited operational challenges, particularly engine supply issues, for its upcoming withdrawal from Abu Dhabi (AUH)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline commenced its UAE capital operations in January 2021 but struggled with grounded aircraft, prompting the decision to exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite speculation, Etihad Airways’ CEO clarified that the process of acquiring airport slots isn\u2019t direct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“These slots are different in timing and structure; it doesn\u2019t work as a simple transfer,” Neves explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Etihad\u2019s upcoming services to Almaty (ALA), Baku (GYD), Bucharest (OTP), Madinah (MED), Tbilisi (TBS), Tashkent (TAS), and Yerevan (EVN)\u2014all former Wizz Air routes\u2014were already part of Etihad\u2019s 2030 growth plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Air Arabia Abu Dhabi (3L) has announced the addition of two Airbus A320s, with plans to induct two more by year-end, increasing its operational capacity by 40% in 2025. This aligns with Abu Dhabi\u2019s broader goals to enhance connectivity and tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neves, who also chairs Air Arabia Abu Dhabi, praised the joint venture\u2019s profitability and performance. However, he maintained that any decision on taking over Wizz Air\u2019s routes will follow a strategic assessment rather than reactive measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Industry experts suggest Wizz Air’s withdrawal reduces competitive pressure on UAE carriers, particularly Flydubai (FZ)<\/a> and Air Arabia (G9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Linus Bauer of BAA & Partners told The National<\/em> that budget carriers might consolidate market share on price-sensitive routes, but face rising expectations for reliability alongside affordability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neves emphasized that the UAE carriers are equipped to seize emerging opportunities due to their operational agility. He noted that access to traffic rights remains open for UAE-based airlines, irrespective of Wizz Air’s market exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neves also addressed recent Gulf airspace closures triggered by geopolitical tensions, including Iran\u2019s failed attack on Qatar’s US base at Al Udeid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Abu Dhabi Airport (AUH) experienced a temporary disruption, Neves praised the UAE\u2019s airspace management and coordination with the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre, ensuring minimal operational impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflecting on his global aviation experience, Neves remarked that the UAE’s response was more proficient than disruptions caused by strikes in Europe or floods in Brazil, showcasing regional resilience in crisis management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the geopolitical challenges, Etihad Airways (EY) expects strong financial results for Q2 2025. Neves revealed that the airline\u2019s load factor recently reached 92%, with July and August bookings at record highs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While operational costs increased due to longer rerouted flights, Etihad’s overall profitability trajectory remains intact. The carrier\u2019s robust oil hedging strategy has cushioned it against fuel price volatility, and insurance premiums remain stable despite regional conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
