The pilots immediately halted the climb at 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) to assess the situation.

After confirming the report, the flight crew executed a precautionary turnback, heading east and re-entering the California coastline near Long Beach. The A350-900 made a controlled left-hand approach and landed safely on Runway 25R at LAX at 9:32 p.m.—only 28 minutes after departure.

Upon landing, the smoke was no longer visible, and cockpit instruments did not show any active fire alerts. Nonetheless, Delta’s flight crew requested emergency services to meet the aircraft on the ground.

Fire units escorted the jet to the gate, and medical personnel were on standby in case of passenger smoke exposure, though no injuries were reported.

Delta subsequently canceled the Sydney-bound flight. All 162 passengers were rebooked on alternative flights to minimize travel disruption. The airline reiterated its commitment to safety in a statement issued after the incident.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people,” said a Delta spokesperson. “That’s why the crew followed established protocols to return to Los Angeles (LAX) after detecting smoke in the galley.
