CHICAGO- United Airlines (UA) will deploy its most premium Boeing 787-9, fitted with the new Elevated interior, on four long-haul routes from Houston (IAH). The move marks the first sustained use of the aircraft outside San Francisco (SFO).
Services to SĂŁo Paulo (GRU), Tokyo Narita (NRT), and Sydney (SYD) begin on October 24, 2026, with London Heathrow (LHR) following on January 5, 2027.

United Adds Second Hub for Elevated Dreamliner
United Airlines will start flying its Boeing 787-9 with the Elevated interior from George Bush Intercontinental Airport later this year. Until now, the aircraft has operated international services only from San Francisco.
According to an update United shared with View from the Wings, 3 Houston routes will receive the aircraft on October 24, 2026:
- Houston (IAH) to SĂŁo Paulo (GRU), effective October 24, 2026
- Houston (IAH) to Tokyo Narita (NRT), effective October 24, 2026
- Houston (IAH) to Sydney (SYD), effective October 24, 2026
A fourth route follows after the new year:
- Houston (IAH) to London Heathrow (LHR), effective January 5, 2027
The airline brands the new cabin project as United Elevate. United unveiled the redesigned long-haul cabins in May 2025.

Why Sydney Route Suits New Cabin
The Sydney assignment is a logical fit because of the flight length. United’s nonstop service between Houston and Sydney can exceed 17 hours, which makes the improved seating, larger screens, and expanded premium cabins particularly valuable on that sector.
Houston to Sydney is United’s longest route by great circle distance at 7,470 nautical miles, or 13,834 kilometres.
The airline blocks the Houston service at 17 hours and 35 minutes, and the route operates daily during the winter season, ending on March 26 and restarting on October 24. That seasonal restart date matches the day the Elevated interior enters Houston service.
The Boeing 787-9 is the only variant United uses on the transpacific crossing to Sydney, and the Houston to Tokyo Narita sector covers 6,643 miles.

Complete Elevated 787-9 Route Network
With the Houston additions, United’s scheduled Elevated 787-9 network will cover seven routes across two hubs:
- San Francisco (SFO) to London Heathrow (LHR)
- San Francisco (SFO) to Singapore (SIN)
- San Francisco (SFO) to Zurich (ZRH)
- Houston (IAH) to SĂŁo Paulo (GRU)
- Houston (IAH) to Tokyo Narita (NRT)
- Houston (IAH) to Sydney (SYD)
- Houston (IAH) to London Heathrow (LHR)
United has been gradually adding the aircraft to more San Francisco frequencies as additional 787-9s arrive.
By September, the Elevated cabin is scheduled across the airline’s daily San Francisco service to London, Singapore, and Zurich. As always, aircraft assignments remain subject to change.
The aircraft flew its first international service as UA1 from San Francisco to Singapore on April 22, 2026, followed by San Francisco to London as UA901 on April 30, 2026. Before that, the type entered domestic service on March 29, 2026, on flight UA2498 from San Francisco to Houston.

Inside 222 Seat Elevated Cabin
United’s new 787-9 contains only 222 seats. The configuration breaks down as follows:
- 8 Polaris Studio suites
- 56 standard Polaris suites
- 35 Premium Plus seats
- 39 Economy Plus seats
- 84 standard economy seats
That adds up to 99 seats in Polaris and Premium Plus alone, making this United’s most premium-heavy aircraft. The airline states the layout carries the highest percentage of premium seats among United States carriers.
On San Francisco to London, the 222-seat 787-9 replaces the 276-seat Boeing 777-200ER, which offered 74 premium seats split between 50 business class and 24 premium economy. The swap lowers total capacity while raising the premium seat share.

Polaris Studio and Onboard Upgrades
Polaris Studio occupies the front row and offers larger suites with privacy doors, 27-inch OLED screens, enhanced bedding, pajamas, and upgraded dining. Six of the eight Studio suites include space for a companion.
Standard Polaris seats also gain doors and larger screens. Every cabin on the aircraft receives upgraded displays and Bluetooth connectivity. Premium Plus additionally gains wireless device charging.
Andrew Nocella, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at United, described the aircraft as a redefinition of international long-haul flying, with upgraded amenities in every cabin.

Fleet Growth Behind Expansion
The Houston rollout depends on further deliveries. United plans to have at least 30 Elevated 787-9s in service worldwide by the end of 2027. The airline has outlined a target of 33 aircraft with the new interiors by 2028.
The expansion indicates the aircraft will not remain confined to a handful of flagship San Francisco routes. It also places the premium product on Houston, which United uses primarily as a Latin America hub.
