MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA— Melbourne Airport (MEL) is preparing for a major transformation after securing a long-term agreement with Qantas (QF) that supports a A$4.5 billion international terminal expansion and the airport’s long-awaited third runway.
The investment is expected to strengthen Melbourne’s position as Australia’s leading international gateway while reducing the need for Victorian travelers to connect through Sydney Airport (SYD) on many overseas journeys.
The agreement includes upgraded passenger facilities, additional aircraft gates, a new Qantas international lounge, and plans to base Airbus A350-1000LR aircraft in Melbourne.
While the third runway is scheduled to open in 2031, the broader redevelopment will improve passenger processing and create opportunities for new nonstop international routes in the coming years.
International Connectivity Growth
A key outcome of the agreement is Qantas’ plan to station several Airbus A350-1000LR aircraft at Melbourne. These aircraft are separate from the carrier’s Project Sunrise fleet and are intended to expand the airline’s long-haul network from Victoria.
Qantas said the additional aircraft will enable services to international destinations that are currently beyond the reach of its Melbourne network.
Although the airline has not announced specific routes, the aircraft’s range could support nonstop flights to destinations across North America, South America, Africa, and Asia where direct services are currently limited or unavailable.
The announcement follows the successful arrival of Qantas’ Airbus A350-1000ULR in Melbourne after a nonstop test flight from Toulouse, demonstrating the airport’s capability to accommodate ultra-long-haul aircraft ahead of future expansion.
Enhanced Passenger Experience
The redevelopment extends beyond additional flights by introducing significant improvements inside the international terminal.
The project includes expanded premium check-in areas, automated baggage drop facilities, baggage tracking technology, and early baggage storage designed to streamline passenger processing.
Melbourne Airport will also expand its international check-in and baggage reclaim halls while adding five new widebody aircraft gates. These upgrades are expected to reduce congestion, shorten waiting times, and increase flexibility for airlines operating larger aircraft.
Qantas will further enhance the passenger experience by constructing a new international business lounge above Terminal 2. The facility is expected to be considerably larger than the current lounge and is planned to open in 2029 as part of the wider terminal redevelopment.
Long-Term Airport Expansion
The commercial agreement includes a 15-year commitment from Qantas supporting Melbourne Airport’s third runway, a project that recently received federal approval, The Canberra Times reported.
The additional runway is expected to become operational in 2031 and will significantly increase aircraft movement capacity through parallel runway operations.
Airport officials believe the expanded infrastructure will allow more simultaneous arrivals and departures, helping reduce delays while creating room for both existing airlines and new international carriers to grow.
The additional capacity is also expected to strengthen competition, improve scheduling options, and provide Victorian travelers with more direct overseas connections instead of relying on domestic transfers through Sydney.
The combination of new terminal facilities, additional widebody gates, advanced passenger technology, and future runway capacity positions Melbourne Airport for sustained international growth over the next decade while supporting Qantas’ long-term network expansion strategy.
