MANCHESTER— Two Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets were scrambled on Friday after a Qatar Airways (QR) flight from Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) to Manchester Airport (MAN) triggered a Quick Reaction Alert while entering United Kingdom airspace.
The aircraft, operating as flight QR23, was safely escorted for part of its journey after civil authorities raised concerns.
The alert was later resolved, and the Boeing 787 landed normally at Manchester Airport at approximately 8:01 p.m. local time without requiring emergency assistance.
RAF Launches Quick Reaction Mission
The RAF confirmed that it activated its Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) protocol after the Qatar Airways flight became a matter of concern for civil authorities.
While officials did not disclose the exact nature of the issue, they emphasized that the response was precautionary and that the situation was safely resolved.
According to available information, two RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft were dispatched to intercept and escort the airliner after it entered UK airspace.
The escort was discontinued before the aircraft reached Manchester, indicating that authorities were satisfied the situation no longer posed a security concern.
Unconfirmed reports circulating within the aviation community suggested that air traffic controllers may have temporarily lost communication with the aircraft.
However, neither the RAF nor air traffic authorities have confirmed those reports, and no official explanation has been released regarding what prompted the military response.
Qatar Airways Flight Lands Safely After Escort
Despite the unusual military escort, the Qatar Airways flight continued to its scheduled destination without further disruption. The aircraft landed safely at Manchester Airport, where it completed its arrival as normal.
Local reports indicated that emergency vehicles were not positioned alongside the runway when the aircraft arrived, suggesting that the incident had been fully resolved before landing.
