DUBAI- Emirates Airline (EK) has completed the first installation of next-generation Starlink Wi-Fi on its flagship Airbus A380, marking a major upgrade to onboard connectivity for the world’s largest passenger aircraft.
The first Starlink-equipped A380 returned to Dubai (DXB) this week after installation and certification work was carried out in Newquay (NQY), United Kingdom. The system delivers more than 2 Gbps of total aircraft bandwidth and will be free for customers across all cabin classes.
Emirates First A380 Equipped with Starlink Wi-Fi
The Emirates A380 was among the first commercial aircraft in the world to offer internet to passengers, with first-generation systems providing less than 1 Mbps of total aircraft bandwidth.
The new installation places three Starlink antennas on each A380, improving onboard Wi-Fi a thousandfold and offering a connectivity experience the airline describes as better than home, even while cruising at 40,000 feet.
Customers will be able to stream, game, browse, and work on personal devices throughout their journey.
The service is complimentary across all cabins, with simple sign-up and access. Emirates also plans future enhancements, including Live TV streaming over Starlink. This feature will launch first on personal devices and later integrate into seatback screens.
The A380 has long set benchmarks in long-haul travel through features such as its Onboard Lounge and First Class Shower Spa. The addition of Starlink connectivity extends that reputation, giving passengers a fully connected experience across every cabin class.
A Technical First for the World’s Largest Aircraft
As the largest passenger aircraft in service, the A380 presents distinct engineering challenges.
This industry-first Starlink configuration is built to handle the aircraft’s double-decker layout and high passenger capacity, delivering more than 2 Gbps of total bandwidth across the cabin.
Compared with the Emirates Boeing 777, the A380 carries additional wireless access points and a third antenna to support its larger passenger load. Optimized inter-deck integration ensures a seamless Wi-Fi experience, with achievable speeds depending on usage levels and device capability.
Accelerated Rollout Across the Fleet
Starlink installations will soon begin at Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai to speed up deployment across the fleet.
The airline aims to bring the best possible connectivity to its entire fleet at the earliest opportunity. So far, 25 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft are already equipped with Starlink, and the first A380 has now entered service with the system.
More than 650,000 Emirates customers have already flown on Starlink-equipped flights and experienced the benefits of next-generation onboard connectivity firsthand.
Continued Investment in Customer Experience
The introduction of Starlink on the A380 builds on one of the most ambitious retrofit programmes in aviation history.
To date, 93 Emirates aircraft have been fully refurbished, with new Premium Economy cabins, an enhanced Business Class, refreshed First Class suites, upgraded Economy Class interiors, and expanded inflight systems offering more than 6,500 channels of entertainment.
Emirates continues to invest in training alongside hardware upgrades. In mid-2025, the airline opened an US$8 million Centre of Hospitality Excellence to train its 25,000 cabin crew in the art of onboard hospitality, combining both the tangible and intangible elements of an outstanding travel experience.
