NEWARK- Newark witnessed an unusual aviation incident when a United Airlines (UA) widebody aircraft made contact with a ground vehicle while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
The event has triggered a federal investigation and raised questions about the approach to safety near airport perimeters. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 767-400 operating a transatlantic flight from Venice.
Officials confirmed that the jet carried 221 passengers and 10 crew members, all of whom remained unharmed after the aircraft landed safely despite the mid-approach impact.

The incident occurred during the final moments of Flight UA169 as it approached Runway 29. This runway runs close to the New Jersey Turnpike, a major highway that borders the airport’s perimeter.
Preliminary information indicates that the aircraft descended lower than expected during approach. As a result, its landing gear struck a bakery delivery truck traveling along the roadway, causing the vehicle to overturn.
The aircraft also made contact with a nearby light pole before continuing its landing sequence. Despite the impact, the pilots maintained control and completed a safe landing without further complications.

Investigation Underway
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an official investigation into the incident. Authorities are working to determine why the aircraft flew at such a low altitude during a critical phase of flight.
The National Transportation Safety Board has also stepped in and instructed the airline to secure key flight data.
Investigators will review the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder to reconstruct the sequence of events.
United Airlines stated that the aircraft safely taxied to the gate and that maintenance teams are currently assessing any structural damage. The airline also confirmed its full cooperation with federal authorities.

The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
