ABU DHABI- Etihad Airways (EY) will double flights between Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Chicago (ORD) starting June 15, 2026. The airline will increase service from one daily flight to two daily flights on the long-haul route.
The expansion strengthens connectivity between Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), making Chicago the airline’s highest capacity market in the United States.

Etihad to Expand Abu Dhabi–Chicago Operations
Etihad Airways has served Chicago since 2009, typically operating one daily flight between Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Chicago (ORD). Beginning June 15, 2026, the airline will introduce a second daily frequency, doubling capacity on the 7,276-mile route.
The updated schedule includes two daily departures in each direction:
Abu Dhabi to Chicago
- EY9 departing Abu Dhabi (AUH) at 02:55 and arriving Chicago (ORD) at 08:35
- EY11 departing Abu Dhabi (AUH) at 10:00 and arriving Chicago (ORD) at 15:40
Chicago to Abu Dhabi
- EY10 departing Chicago (ORD) at 14:00 and arriving Abu Dhabi (AUH) at 12:30 (+1 day)
- EY12 departing Chicago (ORD) at 21:10 and arriving Abu Dhabi (AUH) at 19:40 (+1 day)
The newly introduced frequency is EY11 and EY12. The additional service is already available for booking.

Airbus A350-1000 Aircraft Deployment
According to OMAAT, both daily flights will operate using Etihad’s Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. The aircraft features a two-cabin configuration with 371 seats, including:
- 44 Business Class seats
- 327 Economy Class seats
The A350 plays a key role in Etihad’s long-haul network expansion strategy due to its fuel efficiency and passenger comfort features. The aircraft also provides the airline with strong capacity while maintaining lower operating costs compared with older widebody models.
Etihad currently operates a relatively small A350 fleet of around ten aircraft. Operating two daily Chicago flights will require roughly three aircraft frames dedicated to this route rotation.

Chicago Becomes Etihad’s Largest US Market
Etihad serves six destinations in the United States:
- Atlanta (ATL)
- Boston (BOS)
- Charlotte (CLT)
- Chicago (ORD)
- New York (JFK)
- Washington (IAD)
Chicago will become the airline’s second North American destination with more than daily service, after New York (JFK).
However, when measured by total seat capacity, Chicago will become Etihad’s largest US market. This is because New York service operates using a mix of Boeing 787 aircraft and Airbus A350 aircraft, which provide fewer seats on average compared with the A350-1000 used on the Chicago route.
According to OMAAT, this move is notable because Etihad is the smallest of the three major Gulf carriers. Yet it will be the only one offering multiple daily flights to Chicago, ahead of larger rivals Emirates (EK) and Qatar Airways (QR).

Strategic Role of Chicago in Etihad’s Network
The decision to expand Chicago service instead of launching a new destination highlights the strategic importance of the market.
Several factors likely support the expansion:
First, Chicago O’Hare (ORD) is one of the largest airline hubs in North America. This allows Etihad to benefit from strong connecting traffic.
Second, Etihad maintains a partnership with American Airlines (AA), which operates a major hub at Chicago. This partnership enables passengers to connect to dozens of domestic destinations across the United States.
Finally, the airline is currently in a broader growth phase that includes fleet modernization and route expansion. Increasing frequencies on established routes helps improve schedule flexibility and connectivity for passengers.
