CHICAGO- United Airlines (UA) has unveiled a new Dreamliner featuring a specialized livery that promotes sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), marking a significant step in the airline’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner serves as a flying billboard to raise awareness about alternative fuel solutions in commercial aviation.

The choice of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner for this sustainability message carries strategic significance.
The aircraft stands out as United’s most fuel-efficient widebody aircraft, consuming 20-25% less fuel than comparable aircraft in its class.
This efficiency translates to a 25% reduction in emissions, reinforcing the airline’s environmental messaging through both design and performance.

The San Francisco 49ers have made NFL history by becoming the league’s first team to purchase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) through a groundbreaking partnership with United Airlines. The team will use SAF for their United flight from San Francisco to Los Angeles this Sunday, marking their initial commitment to reducing aviation emissions.
United’s SAF technology delivers up to 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional jet fuel. The fuel derives its environmental benefits from renewable materials instead of fossil fuels, with its sustainability metrics verified by independent third-party certification.
United Airlines stands as the current U.S. industry leader in SAF adoption, having set an ambitious net-zero greenhouse gas emission target for 2050 without using voluntary carbon offsets. The airline deployed SAF blends across five airports in the United States and Europe in 2023, establishing the widest SAF distribution network among U.S. carriers.
United CEO Scott Kirby emphasized SAF’s critical role in aviation decarbonization while acknowledging current challenges. “SAF has the potential to be a powerful tool to help reduce carbon emissions from flying, but the industry is still in its infancy, supply is limited, and most people don’t know what it is,” Kirby stated. He highlighted the partnership’s role in expanding public awareness about sustainable aviation solutions.
The 49ers bring substantial environmental credentials to this partnership. Their home venue, Levi’s® Stadium, holds LEED Gold certification, pioneering environmental standards in professional football facilities. The stadium’s solar installation generates sufficient power to sustain all home games.
The partnership extends beyond SAF implementation. United serves as a founding member of the 49ers’ “Faithful to the Planet” initiative, supporting ocean pollution reduction and tree conservation programs.
Brent Schoeb, 49ers’ Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer, confirmed their participation in United’s Eco-Skies Alliance. “As the first NFL team to invest in SAF, this is a meaningful part of our commitment to more sustainable practices, and we’re grateful to United for leading the way in this space,” Schoeb declared.
