TOKYO- A Singapore Airlines (SQ) Boeing 787-10 encountered a technical problem with its brakes and reported smoke upon landing at Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) on August 12, 2024.
The incident, which occurred at 7:38 am local time, resulted in white smoke emanating from the aircraft’s left engine.

An SIA spokesperson confirmed the issue to Mothership, stating that the ground engineering team promptly addressed the technical problem. The team also replaced one of the tyres on the Boeing 787-10 aircraft involved in the incident.
The brake malfunction caused a ripple effect on subsequent flights. Flight SQ637, scheduled to depart for Singapore, faced a delay of over two hours. The plane eventually took off at 1:28 pm local time.
SIA expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers affected by the incident. The airline reiterated its commitment to passenger and staff safety, emphasizing it as their top priority.
Witnesses observed white smoke emanating from the plane’s left engine as it touched down.
The incident, which occurred on Runway B, prompted immediate action from airport authorities. Firefighters responded to the scene, reporting no injuries among the 260 passengers and 16 crew members on board.
Airport officials closed Runway B for approximately 50 minutes to address the situation. Ground crews towed the affected aircraft away from the runway, allowing for a thorough inspection of the area. During this examination, workers discovered tyre debris on the runway, suggesting a possible connection to the smoke emission.
Japanese media outlet Kyodo News first reported the incident, citing information received from local firefighters. The quick response of emergency personnel ensured the safety of all individuals involved.
