CHENNAI- Tamil Nadu capital, Chennai, may become the first Indian city to establish a direct flight connection to Penang, a Malaysian state.
Wong Hon Wai, the Penang State Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy, revealed ongoing discussions about a direct flight between Chennai and Penang during the 7th edition of the Penang Roadshow to India 2024 in Chennai.
Chennai to Penang Flight
Efforts are underway to connect tier-2 towns in Tamil Nadu to Kuala Lumpur, with plans for an additional flight from Chennai and the introduction of direct flights from Madurai and Tiruchi to Kuala Lumpur, as mentioned by Razaidi Abdul Rahim, Director of Tourism Malaysia (South India and Sri Lanka).
Currently, AirAsia operates 14 flights per week from Chennai to Kuala Lumpur, along with Batik Air (7 flights per week), Malaysia Airlines (14 flights per week), and IndiGo (7 flights per week). From January to November 2023, the total tourist arrivals to Malaysia from India amounted to 587,703.
The Tourism Minister of Penang highlighted the diverse tourist and business attractions in the region and emphasized the upcoming completion of a new convention center in 2025, aiming to create more opportunities for business ventures.
He highlighted that the recent announcement of visa-free travel, permitting stays up to 30 days from December 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024, is anticipated to attract a higher number of Indian visitors to Malaysia.
Penang Odyssey campaign
On Friday (Jan 19, 2024), the Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) introduced the 7th edition of the Penang Roadshow to India 2024 in Chennai. This roadshow serves as a platform for Indian travel enthusiasts and industry professionals to gain more insights into Penang.
As per PCEB’s statement, the ‘Penang Odyssey’ campaign is a strategic initiative aiming to position Penang as the preferred destination for both business meetings and leisure experiences in the Indian market.
With a dual focus on business and leisure, the campaign aims to cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with India’s travel agents.
The Penang Odyssey campaign is set to explore innovative approaches to capture the Indian market, recognizing its importance as a key market for Penang.
In 2023, Penang successfully hosted around 600 events with 160,000 delegates, indicating a robust event calendar with an estimated Economic Impact (EEI) of RM1 billion.
