TOKYO- The Japanese flag carrier Japan Airlines (JL) has named its first female president, as Chief Customer Officer Mitsuko Tottori is elevated to the position of the carrier’s head.
With nearly four decades of experience at the airline, Tottori will officially take on the role of President and Representative Director on April 1, succeeding Akasaka Yuji, who will transition to the role of Airline Chair.
Japan Airlines First Female President
This marks the first instance of a major Japanese airline being led by a female president, and it also represents JAL’s initial appointment of a president with a background as a flight attendant.
Mitsuko Tottori, aged 59, commenced her journey with JAL in 1985. In 2015, she ascended to the position of Senior Director of Cabin Crew Affairs. Progressing through the ranks, she became Vice President of the Cabin Safety Department in 2019, followed by a promotion to Senior Vice President of Cabin Attendants a year later.
In April 2023, Tottori assumed the role of Senior Vice President of Customer Experience, overseeing the brand communication portfolio. Just two months later, she transitioned into the role of Chief Customer Officer, a position she will hold until April.
The airline emphasizes, “JAL Group is committed to working collectively to ensure the utmost safety in all flight operations, continually enhance the quality of products and services for our valued customers, and elevate corporate value to contribute to the growth and development of society.”
