India’s soaring cases of Covid are inducing wealthy families to leave the country by private jet. Due to the shortage of beds, medical oxygen and drugs and even more, many Indian tycoons and those who can afford are booking flights to boltholes in Europe, the Middle East and the Indian Ocean.
Many are travelling overseas to restrict travel from South Asian countries. Canada, UAE, UK, Hong Kong have already imposed ban on Indian passengers.
“There was a huge surge to London and Dubai just before the restrictions took place, and the Maldives too before they announced the ban,” said Mehra.
“It’s not only the ultra rich”, “Whoever can afford to take a private jet are taking private jets.” said Rajan Mehra, chief executive officer at New Delhi-based private jet firm Club One Air.
As the country’s health framework rasping under the strain of growing obstacles, many privileged are leaving the nation. Not only big tycoons but Bollywood movie superstars are also spotted escaping to various destinations like Maldives. On the other hand at least three Australian cricketers have quit the Indian Premier League.
However, these flights are very expensive. Mehra once claimed that a one-way flight from New Delhi-Dubai costs around 1.5 million rupees (i.e. $20,000). This includes ground handling and other fees and taxes. Moreover the private-jet operators also charge for the return of the plane if it is empty.
According to Mehra the cost of one way tickets to Dubai have climbed up by 10 times. However those who can afford are still buying. Mehra added,
“THIS SHOWS HOW DESPERATELY PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO GET AWAY”
