GURUGRAM- India’s largest airline in terms of market share, IndiGo (6E), hired 77 female pilots today (August 14, 2024) to commemorate India’s 77 years of independence.
This move increases the carrier’s female pilot count to over 800, reinforcing its commitment to gender diversity in aviation.
IndiGo Hires 77 Female Pilots
The induction included 72 pilots for the Airbus fleet and 5 for the ATR fleet. IndiGo now boasts a 14% female pilot workforce, surpassing the global average of 5-8%.
Captain Ashim Mitra, Senior Vice President of Flight Operations, emphasized IndiGo’s dedication to fostering diversity and inclusivity in the workplace.
The airline has implemented life cycle initiatives allowing female pilots with children under five to opt for reduced flying contracts, enhancing work-life balance.
As of March 31, 2024, IndiGo employed 36,860 permanent staff, including 5,038 pilots and 9,363 cabin crew members. This latest induction significantly contributes to the airline’s gender-balanced workforce strategy.
CEO Remarks
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo Airlines said, “Today India celebrates its 78th Independence Day and 77th anniversary. Jai Hind.”
He further added,
On this occasion, IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Ltd) welcomed 77 new female pilots (JFOs). Whilst IndiGo already is a leading airline with 15% female pilots, we aspire to do more. By 2025 we expect to have 1,000 female pilots! Our ‘Girl Power’ and Diversity commitments are not just words but a proud reality at IndiGo.
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo
Whilst talking with my newly inducted colleagues, I was personally touched by their beautiful life stories and personal journeys. Some coming from very rural parts of India and now being the first female pilots in their districts. It was humbling listening to these stories of perseverance to be where they are today. A story of freedom so fitting today.
It reminds us of role-models and inspiration, youngsters need to first find/discover for themselves and thereafter, breaking barriers and relentlessly going after fullfilling their dreams and aspirations.
Now, in turn, as part of IndiGo’s vision, they will not only be fulfilling their own dreams, but also helping others in giving wings to their dreams and inspirations.
Independence Sale
IndiGo has also unveiled its Freedom Sale in celebration of India’s upcoming Independence Day on August 15. The airline announced the sale through its official X account, formerly known as Twitter, on August 13, 2024.
